The Proposal

Nancy was a cheerful, extrovert girl and ready to march head along and invite trouble without actually making much efforts. With her newly found independence, she found a new person in herself. She was happy juggling her career and higher education along with life and people in a new country. Away from home, she built a world all of her own accord. She was praised at work, was doing well, had a lot of friends and a decent social life.

"Hello, are you Nancy? I was asked to pass this document to you. Also, it would be wonderful if you could check whether all is in place", spoke a man from the HR department of her office.

Nancy recognised the man from the metro she saw everyday while commuting to the office but she was not aware that they worked under the same roof. Nancy was so hooked to her headphone until her arrival to office that she was not concerned about anything except herself.

"Hey, do you come to the office on the metro, I think I have seen you a couple of times", said she. She also appeared familiar to the boy.

Nancy met ABC sometimes on the metro, or at the coffee machine or in some meeting where boring work was discussed. Together they discussed about random issues, workplace gossips, literature, movies and everything. They seemed to have developed a good bonding over a few days. Abc was always very happy to see her.

Slowly, Nancy fell for him and planned to talk to him about it. But the boy all of a sudden was not be seen anywhere, and was missing office. She waited for a few days hoping to see him again.

She never saw him in the transport or at the coffee machine or any other place hanging around in the office. She did not want to draw attention so did not enquire about his whereabouts. She dropped a few messages but no reply.

She got busy with life until one day she saw him in the office again. He was waiting for her at her desk. She was so happy to see him. Immediately she asked him, "where have you been?". He told her that he also had been wanting to meet her to let her know that he was up for an offer from another organisation and had been busy with it for the last few days.

Nancy's heart sank but she smilingly congratulated him. Also she enquired about the new organisation and the role he has to play. Nancy kept on trying to decide whether to tell or not to tell, but she couldn't muster the courage to tell him. She said to herself, "probably the next day". For the next few days she tried ways of proposing to him, but did not succeed in making an effort.

It was his last day in office and he had invited a few people on lunch. Nancy was also there. Finally, it was time for her to wish him goodbye and the moment Nancy was about to convey her feelings, he told Nancy about how he had feelings for a colleague of Nancy and he wanted help from Nancy to able to express himself to the girl.

Nancy looked at him for a minute and then took him to meet that colleague and introduced them. She then moved ahead to chat with the other people present there. Heart broken she was, but little did she let that on her face. Later, she gave him the gift she bought and wished him the best for his future.
